The next major version of Visual Studio is to coincide with the next major Windows release, which I think is "Longhorn", but I can't keep the codenames straight anymore. <g>
I think you will see an additional rev of Visual Studio .NET to coincide with the next SQL Server (Yukon) probably not before late 2003 or early 2004. That will place the .NET runtime capabilities into the SQL engine and allow Stored Procedures to run in any CLR language.
Longhorn is much later, and is the next Windows version.
