It sounds like a network configuration problem. First make sure all the boxes are updated to XP SP1. Since it's peer-to-peer there's no definite server/browse master on the network so it's important to follow the instructions in

- disable any antivirus product that may be running
- see if the problem is specific to one machine, or to all
- simplify wherever possible
