FWIW, our company built one of the fist web-based electronic patient systems using a VFP/foxisapi backend with a Java client. This was in 1995-1997. We tried to do a java backend as well but at that time it was simply too flaky.
Currently we use VFP for lots of our backends. It works well and is extremely stable.
My view on changing tools etc is summed up in the Machiavelli quote in my sig.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
