>My client is in the process of moving a very large (over 5 GIG of data spread over more than 1,000 tables) from a Novell environment to a W2K Server. The data will be stored in a SAN, with a fiberoptics link between the Server and the drive farm. The Visual FoxPro applications are used daily by up to 270 users, with 170 being a good estimate of the number of average daily users. The application's nature is one of high levels of IO, with a very high percentage of the transactions including writes to the database.

>The Network Support Group is in the process of defining the specifications for the server, and are very much interested in the optimal number of CPUs and memory (it is expected that the fiber link between the drives and the server will provide sufficient throughput for disk access). Other than the classic "get the biggest and fastest server you can get" answer, I'd be interested in the experiences and suggestions of those who have tackled this type of issue, or have environments up an running that are similar and have either acceptable or non-acceptable performance.

I'd be interested to hear more about your installation once done. This is certainly a good example of what VFP can be sitted on top of as you have a large number of users and traffic. I don't have any specific specs to suggest as I never faced such a situation. I mostly rely on Web servers, within the last few years, and I usually install the most powerful box I can find on the market when time comes. That includes RAID solution, double CPUs, etc. But, yours is certainly an interesting setup. Keep us inform!
