While "blown out somewhat" is certainly possible, equally possible is an ability to optimize the application so that it can continue fully in VFP.
I've seen a (batch) billing job go from 3 days to 12 hours with no significant change to code (certainly no "redesign"). I've seen an app with 250+ users and 30+ gigs of table data (several tables near 2 gig) have sub-second response time.
Chances are it can be improved. But not without some details of the actual application.
