The good news is samba works great. The bad new is that vfp.exe and VFP apps will not execute on a samba share. For my accounting app, I set up a samba file system on the linux box using [fox/data/???]. I copied the DBF/tables to the Linux Samba file system. Then I use windows NT 4.0, and XP/2000 clients on the users desktop to run the app. The application runs on the user's desktop system to access the DBC/tables on the samba file system using a path, just like a path that would appear if the user browsed the network neighborhood to access the DBC/tables. I'm not running enough traffic over the samba file system to stress the system, so someone else will need to provide information about performance capabilities and number of concerrent user that can be support on various hardware configuration using a samba file system, but I think it would be at least as good as running the same configuration on windows.

I also use the samba share as a quick backup of my app's source code and installshield configuration. I run a web server on the linux box in /var/www/html. I use Homesite and EditPlus on my windows XP Pro system to open /var/www/html and /var/www/cgi-bin on the linux samba file system to create/edit html and cgi-bin perl/php scripts. I can also compile my app and easily copy it to the web directroy just like I could copy any file from one place to another via network neighborhood. This was a big improvement over using an FTP client to copy/edit files located on a web space provided by an ISP. It is much faster and more convenient when local.

I also use my Linux system as a mail server. The Linux sendmail program is super for this and its very fast and reliable.
