Are you using ODBC to connect to different VFP databases? I found that it was very difficult if not impossible to connect to multiple databases unless both of the databases files were located within the same path/directory/folder. So now we always set the ODBC Adminstrator by configuring it to the same directory/path and stick all of the databases in that same directory/path location. It's not what we really want to do, but it simplifies this problem that we were having and you may be experiencing.
