I did a quick search of the web and came up with the following link:

This appear to be a solution to the problem for Red Hat Linux 7.3 and 8.0 that does not involve a rebuild of the kernel. I have not personal tried this so I cannot report whether this would work on a dual boot single computer where RedHat Linux 7.3 or 8.0 shared a windows 2000/XP platform.

A search of the internet might turn up a simular protential solution for SuSe Linux.
