An intranet is not only about LAN or using a browser to host an application. There are sevaral aspects for contemporary intranet application you should take into account to make sure that you deliver a good solution:

1. use HTTP over TCP/IP as communication protocol
2. use internal non routable subnet
3. use thin client browser-based interface
4. use XML for data exchange
5. use web-portal to host application portlets
6. use single-signon
7. use http clustering

and others.

Look at http://www.arnicacorp.com - Arnica offers all neccessary (VFP-based!) enterprise-strength technologies for VFP programmers. Using VFP with all these tools you could finally beat Java pro's in building web-based data-driven applications for both local intranet and internet.
