Yes, and somehow the Gregorian Calendar (the one we usually use, based on Pope Gregor XIII) is also based on the lunar cycles - although the relation is a little farther in this case. The "moons" of ca. 29 1/2 days have been rounded to "months" of 30 or 31 days. But it is still obvious that it originally derives from the lunar cycles.

Islam, by the way, uses a year of exactly 12 months (moons). That makes the year ca. 11 days short (354 days/year instead of 365). 33 gregorian years are approximately equivalent to 34 "lunar" (islamic) years.
