They are two very different things. The idea of the name was some marketing genius that decided to tagging behind the fame of "Java" would help. The only thing it accomplished IMO is to confuse people.

That said, JavaScript (or JScript in MS parlance) is very nice and very necessary if you have to do any kind of web work.
