If you issue SET SYSFORMATS ON, Visual FoxPro will use the settings from the Control Panel. This affects presentation of dates (DMY, or MDY, or YMD), numeric format, and several other options.

The other alternative is to keep SET SYSFORMATS OFF (the default), and use SET POINT and SET SEPARATOR.

For instance, in the United States they use "." for separating decimals, and "," for separating thousands, millions, etc. In Latin America, it is usually the other way; so I could issue:
set point to ","
set separator to "."
