I just purchased WinXP Pro Upgrade version to upgrade (the worthless piece of crap) WindowsME that came with my home computer. My reason for upgrading to XP Pro was to try the VFP 8 Beta while still using VFP 6.0 and to fix the constant problems that I have had with WinME. Before upgrading I uninstalled Visual Studio, MSDN and most other software so that in theory, the upgrade should be easier and I could reinstall my programs with less trouble. For the most part, it has gone pretty well, until I tried to install Visual Studio 6 (I use VFP 6.0 SP5).

When I try to install Visual Studio, I get the following error message
The Visual Studio Enterprise Edition Installation Wizard has detected
you have one or more of the following Visual Studio 97 applications
running. You must shut down the other applications before you can install
Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise Edition.

Microsoft Visual C++
Microsoft Visual Basic
Microsoft Visual J++
Microsoft Visual InterDev
Microsoft Visual SourceSafe
Microsoft Visual FoxPro
Microsoft Developer Network

What is up with that. This computer has never had Visual Studio 97 installed and Visual Studio 6 and MSDN was completely uninstalled before upgrading to XP Pro. The installation will not proceed after this message. I have verified in the Task Manager that no application is running, and only the processes that are loaded by XP are running. I disabled Mcafee VirusScan and Hotsync for Palm Pilot. and still the same thing. The first time that I rebooted after trying VS Setup, when Win XP started to come back up, I got the fatal error blue screen with
Stop: 0x0000007E(0xC0000005,0xF86C0000,0xF8981CAC,0xF89819AC)
But it booted OK after turning the computer off and back on.

I have rebooted the computer numerous times and each time verified that there is nothing running when I try to run the installation for Visual Studio 6. VS Setup still has the same VS 97 running error message each time I have tried to install it.

Has anybody seen this or can tell me why this is happening or can make suggestions for getting VFP 6 installed?
