Set up a Unix Server
Install MySQL on the Unix Server
Set up your Unix /MySQL tables on the Unix Server

In the VFP/Windows Destop:
Install the MySQL ODBC driver/DNS to the Unix Server
SQLCONNECT from VFP 7 to your Unix/MySQL database through the ODBC
SQLEXEC('your select,update and insert commands')

In short the VFP would run on the Windows desktop as a client to the Unix server (and MySQL) through the ODBC.

Other options:
FoxBase (Text) will run on Unix. DbaseIV (text)will run on Unix - there were also rumors that Borland GUI dBase products would run on Unix and Solaris. - and you might check out dB2K (dBase Gold?) to see if they have configured a GUI for UNIX.
