This is a very possible complication of violent neck wrenching especially if there is some atheroma or other pathology. Another possibility is paralysis and/or death.

FWIW, if you press your finger lightly beside the upper part of your Adam's Apple you will feel the carotid pulse. The artery is usually a bit further out, feel across and you'll be able to locate it. Move your head quickly around, you'll feel the muscles and tissues supporting the artery as it gets pulled. Now imagine involuntary wrenching.

If a carotid clots and throws a piece of clot into the bloodstream, it'll most likely end up wedged in a bloodvessel somewhere in your brain - causing a stroke.

I agree with the Rambo movies, wrenching necks is not something you do to help people.
