When I use the West Wind classes that you mentioned or try a MAPI connection, Microsoft Exchange 5.5 comes back with an error of Undeliverable because it does not know these people to whom I am trying to email to. The only way around this is to add them to Exchange.
But, if I email via Outlook, even though it goes through the exchange server for internet connection, it will mail out without an error.
