Even if you replace memo field with data of the same or smaler size than old one and table is open in shared mode, VFP still writes memo data at the end of the FPT file.

(I just checked :) So its even worse than I thought because if you add some data to an existing memo field then it re-writes the entire memo data again at the end of the FPT - but this does make sense in a way since how else to handle data deletions etc. So, the PACK just removes all the old redundent copies of the memo field.
