I have been using eztwain.dll it appears to work and it's free. There is an issue that I hope you are aware of - Windows 98,2000 use Kodak drivers and Windows ME, and XP use different drivers (I have forgotten the name at the moment)to open images. So to avoid the trouble of different drivers I choose to use eztwain which works on all platforms. I'm using an epson 1660 scanner and have not used other products - so I'm not to sure it works with other scanners as well as it does with the epson.

All eztwain does is talk with the twain driver.
