From the BOL:

"The sp_createorphan and sp_droporphans stored procedures are used for ODBC ntext, text, and image processing."

I'm not sure about what is happening. If I were to guess, I'd say that ODBC is caching the data in a form that is easier to work with.

Have you tried using a stored procedure and passing the data as a text or ntext parameter?
