Binding grids\lists directly to tables engaged in complex relations has caused me a lot of headaches in the past. For these situations I like to buffer grid or list by binding to an array and\or manually filling. It also has added benefit of giving you hook to perform some operation before filling list.

You can also try shifting focus away from grid before calling refresh.
