By using Automation. Has anyone recommended Tamar and Della's book to you yet? That would be a good place to start. Alternately, you can turn on Macro recording in Excel, do the formatting you want, and then look at the code the recorder generated in the Visual Basic Editor.

Because XLS is an Excel 2.0 format, and XL5 is Excel 5.0. Neither one of those supports spreadsheets of over 16384 rows.
