>What's so wrong about the statusbar ActiveX control that Windows itself uses?
Oh man you opened up a can of worms with this one <g>...
Plainly put it sucks and always has. The control doesn't show a proper sizing thumb as it does say in VB. It doesn't work with themes so now we have these cool XP style forms in 8 and a toolbar that stuck in 90's. Yeah, looks matter.
The toolbar causes initial sizing problems on VFP forms. The result of which is that you often see a form pop up and the toolbar is blank until you resize. I have several apps where I had to use timers to wait for a second then slightly resize the form just to get the damn statusbar to show correctly.
It would be relatively trivial to build a nice toolbar control for VFP that's built in.
There are really two issues hear - the behavioral problems (resizing) and the fact that the Statusbar control itself is dated and unlikely to ever be revved again.
FWIW, none of the Common Control in MSCOMCTL.OCX are XP aware so all those controls don't follow XP guidelines which means for one that you can't build XP Logo applications if you use these controls...
