I've been following this too - you're right about .NET, of course - but I have the distinct feeling MS would love to drop .NET from all the other products, too. But it's way too late for the other products, so they're now stuck with an ambiguous term (.NET) that evokes confusion right & left amongst IT personnel, let alone average users, by MS's own admission. MS'll just have to make the best of things, at this point.
Besides, the .NET name and vision may yet work out fine, it just won't work out as fast as MS had once planned.
