John;

They tried to poll companies in Silicon Valley but they were all out of business.

OK, so there are one or two companies left but they are hard to find let alone poll. We did loose 127,000 programmers from April 2001 through last December and those are official numbers as of this Monday. That number only includes Santa Clara County, which is Silicon Valley. Then we have Alameda, San Mateo, and San Francisco counties who also lost a lot of jobs in IT, but they have not published the number of lost jobs.

I am not sure if and when our company will go .NET but I am going off for a few weeks of training on the subject. Some laid off programmers joined the San Jose Sheriff’s Department and were about to graduate when they got laid off last week. California is not a good place to be. They just announced a 10-15 % cutback will occur for a number of local police departments. No more temporary teachers credentials are being issued as they will begin laying off teachers. Tens of thousands of State workers are slated for layoff.

Other than that the Super Bowl will take our minds off of reality for a few daze!

The name of the game is to survive and so far I am a success. I also pray every day for everyone.

Tom
