I do not remember all the details but I recall measuring macro substitution vs named expressions and the latter was 15% faster. That was about ten years ago as I recall and as you indicated using a macro does not always work! So I stopped using macros for substitution of file names and am comfortable with ().

Besides Sergey’s words of wisdom and good references I found macro substitution of a simple file without spaces to be flaky. If something bites me once that is enough! :)
