I was trying something new with this application by using top level forms. I hesitated posting for help because I had a suspicion I was overlooking something and, sure enough, after posting, I changed the setting from top level form to show in top level form and it worked. Tracing through the code confused me even more since everything showed Form2 as modal yet the first form regained control. My understanding of top level forms has increased as has my humility.

RTFM was what I tried initially since that's a pretty nifty source of information. I guess I need to re-read the manuals.
