John,
My vote is to follow Hilmar's advice. However, for Rushmore purposes you may need to have another index on that same field, without the filter on not deleted(). This index would be a regular index (as opposed to candidate).

My question is: how can I check a tables "marked for deletion" records so that I can have a form pop up informing the user that this Title has been used before and if they'd like to RECALL it. I know how to recall a deleted record... but I don't know how to search through them.
