The default is 1024 memory variables.

What OS ? Some very intensive SQL type of jobs will fail under W98 (due to the cr***y memory management) and hum under NT/W2K.

You can load up "System Manager" on a 256MB system under W98 and see the "unused physical memory" go down to practically nill, while the same system running W2K in another partition (with more concurrent tasks) will maintain 70MB+ in Task Manager.
