Thanks for trying. It turns out the CDX was corrupted. Once I "closed all", deleted the .cdx from Windows Explorer, and tried the SQL, everything worked.

I think the corruption had something to do with the autoincrement column (since they seem to give me all sorts of fits) in VFP8-Beta. But I'm not sure. I'm going to reinstall my development machine and put on the VFP8 production release when I get it from MSDN.
