Dan,
I remember having tried this but I had problems with the view designer. When I composed the expression for the remote view (Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere)by entering
SUBSTRING(cdesc,1,50)
in the "Functions and expressions" textbox , and clicked the Add button, the view designer added quotation marks to the expression and saving of that view didn't work because I got a connectivity error. What I'm trying to say here is that I can't create those fields by means of the VFP 7.0 view designer tool. That's why I sought in that direction.
But in the end, your solution is basically the simplest and thus the best. And it is not because the VFP view designer tool doesn't permit it, one shouldn't adopt this method. The only problem is that you have to do it manually. Maybe this view designer issue is resolved in VFP 8.0?
Thanks,
Mark
If everything seems to be going well, you obviously don't know what the hell is going on !
