If you will turn on odbc tracing and get the update statement from the text file it creates, you will probably see what the problem is. If it is the char problem then you will have to got to sql pass through. Disclaimer, I have never worked with oracle before so I am doing a lot of guessing. I stopped using remote views because of the char issue.
