When they click the back button they get a page not found message and then have to re-click the link to get back to the main page and re-logon again. As I originally said, I checked with the web site administrator and they said they do not use an automatic logoff.

Have you checked if settings on your browser are the same as the users with the problem. The areas I would initially look at are whether or not cookies are accepted, security, caching & how/when new versions of pages are looked for (I'm assuming your using IE, BTW).
