I think you should respect the users right to have complete control over their desktop - write to the minimum size is a basic approach that works. Sure it would be nice if we could write to a large screen - less pages on our page frames - but hey, page frames are a reasonaable answer to the people who insist on having 640*480 but I notice more adapters have a minimum of 800*600 so eventually that may be the size to write to.
