I don't think I would fret over connections with MSDE. The thing to watch with MSDE is concurrent 'work' being done (queries, inserts etc). You should see a message in your MSDE log when you exceed it. Also, remember when you do exceed it (I think it is around 8) all of the work will slow-not just the one that sent it over.
