I was made aware I could make this work when omitting the ?. However, this introduces the problem (as described in this thread), you must make sure the variable used for macro expansion does not exist when defining the view, or else it will evaluate the variable first and will make that part of the view definition.
OTOH, to it made perfect sense to use the &?cWhere, because all my parameters in view definitions are prefixed with a ?. I was very disappointed to see that this did not work anymore with in VFP8. I never thought about omitting the ?
