ALINES() will do that for you, at least in VFP 8.

? ALINES(laX,"1111 2222 3333 4444",.f.," ")
? lax[1] && 1111
? lax[2]
? lax[3]
? lax[4] && 4444

The 4th parameter is the character to use to parse the list. Without that parsing at " " characters you would only get one line.
