Presumably you're talking about slow internet transport? If you have to shift a large file then best approach must be FTPing a compressed file.

But I assume when you say 'updating' you mean these records are changes/additions to the local table rather than a replacement for it. If it IS a replacement can you perhaps reduce the volume by only transmitting changes based on a timestamp ?
