I'm not sure but could it be that your setting the cursor and lock type before you open the records set????

I know that in Vis InterDev Intellisens when you open a record set it gives you the method, connection, type, lock,option.. info ... so I am wondering if that might be it.

When I add I generally use 2, and 2 like

rsMessage.open "messages", conn, 2, 2

I'm not expert but you might give that a try. Anyway... hope it helps.
