That may just be what we called (back in Serbia during the last years of Milosevic) "biography washing". A politician or other public figure changes sides abruptly and publicly, but going with the mainstream public opinion and against the official one. That may be a symptom - first rat jumping ship?

Or it could be the dirtier tactic of passing the right message through a wrong messenger, hoping that he'll mess it up and stain the message in the minds of recipients?
