Hmm, I was in the middle of downloading a bunch of XP updates at the time (not yet installed) when it wasn't working. After the download completed, it all worked OK, both before and AFTER the installation of those updates.

But I know what you mean about "trustworthy computing". ;) I've got another box (my laptop) with W2K on that becomes nearly non-functional whenever I try to apply SP2 to it. I haven't had the nerve to try SP3, so for now, I leave it at SP1.
