The hate may be growing, but there was an interesting phenomenon displayed in a TV show I saw some time ago about this very issue.
Virtually all people shown commenting - from the middle east to Pakistan - said that they despised the American government but certainly not the American people themselves. Of course it was the U.S. foreign policy that was their big problem.
So there's hope yet.
