I have never used "blinking" text either; I've never found it necessary. But I will defend anyone's right to at least consider it.
Today it was blinking text; tommorrow it might be a truly new and innovative UI element from the same source. It would be a shame if this element never saw the light of day because the source was discouraged from expressing their views because they did not meet "the guidelines". (I noticed they are already talking in terms of what "follows the guidelines" ... innocence lost.)
If we had to sit and wait for innovation from only those outfits that "published guidelines" (and that includes Apple, IBM and MS), it would be a sorry state indeed.
