The newer boxes have quite a few engineering improvements over the old box.
some of them:
1. gigabit on the motherboard. Even Fiber channel is now available.
2. 533 system bus
3. 133 Mhz ATA 133 IDE or SCSI. The IDE is quite a bit less expensive.
4. More memory means the system can cache queries and visit the hard drive less often. A single processor with 515 MEGS RAM should do ya.
5. Large capacity hard drives are relatively cheap, hence you can easily set up the reliability of a RAID system.
6. Warranty and service from the vendor.
7, Much better file security than NT.
8. All the specs above less a monitor can be purchased for less than $1500 currently from Dell. and they will toss in a CD writer, and free shipping as well.
9. The most stabe server software in Windows is currently Win2k Advanced Server, however, if you are not hosting web sites, then Win2k Pro will handle it quite nicely.
