Do you see an icon at the right corner of the top toolbar (next to the house icon) with the persons' heads and envelope? If yes, this is for sending private messages. The other less convenient way would be to click on person's name, then send private message from there. If you just click on the person's envelope, you would send a regular mail.

You have to configure yourself, which icons to have at the top menu (I hope, it's a BUTM feature).
