No offense Jim, but the French aided the South during our Civil War, though that's an internal US affair, so more difficult to categorize. But in that perspective, one might call the Brits (and other BC countries, like Canada & OZ) our oldest major friends.

But both France & Britain are rather long-term US friends, any way you look at it.
