After reading the other replies I think I have found a way around this problem.
Using a barcode scanner the scanned barcode will be 'typed' into the text box very fast (compared to a user entering the barcode on the keyboard). So if you can somehow measure the time it takes from the first text box input until the last input you could determine if it was the scanner or the user using the keyboard. Might not be 100% accurate but the longer the barcode string is the more accurate it should be.
