If you are on a modal form when try this, you will get the same result as when using your timer. You will have the same behaviour you described to Michel. BTW, if you are in VFP development environment when you do this, you don't need to go to the task manager. You can click on program menu and hit cancel.

When you are on a modal form, focus cannot be set to another form...unless you launch another child form.
