Well, if I'm not writing it, I guess someone else would be. :) Basically, readonly flag forbids changes to a file. So, as long as it's like that, its intention is to remain unchanged. However, if the read only flag is not normal, that said that it came in like that and nobody knows exactly why it is so, then, you may change the file attribute from VFP, assuming you'd detect it first, and do your change after. But, usually, if this is an application database that needs input, I really don't understand why it's read only.
