If you are working from an NT-based OS, you can set the process priority from the task manager. This enabled me to do some "datacrunching" jobs (48-96H) in the background on a machine also needed for other tasks.
If you go into "production", there are some WINAPI-calls for thread and process priority to automate this as well.
