I'm not sure, but my guess would be that VS.NET may install it in order to display the Server Explorer. Again, just a guess.
The real utility comes when you're faced with a repetitive task. What I did was pretty simple: Created a table with the groups, created one with the databases, and another for the tables. Also created relationships be the groups, databases, and tables. It allows me to specify what databases, and tables to run a script against.
The tables where created using SQLDMO and Fox. As I said, I'd be happy to share the general information regarding how this is done.
